Chemical Transportation Applications
Sealing solutions for valves and other critical components in Chemical Transportation applications
Gauging Device
The Gauging Device is used while loading and unloading tank cars to measure the amount of product being shipped. It is also used to determine outage and filling limits to prevent overloading a tank.
Most gauging devices consist of:
- Two (2) AS568 O-Rings, commonly known as the housing seal and position seal.
- A HMF FlatSealTM flange gasket made of a PTFE-based polymer with additives, depending on the application.
Manway
The Manway, which provides access to the tank interior, is often used by shippers to load product in general purpose tank cars.
The Manway is sealed in one of two ways:
- A Lid Gasket, made of a PTFE or PTFE-based polymer with additives, fitted into the manway lid groove.
- A Nozzle Gasket, made of an elastomeric material, commonly used to latch onto the manway nozzle.
Pressure Relief Valve - Safety Valve
The Pressure Relief Valve (PRV), also known as a Safety Valve, is situated on top of tank cars and designed to relieve excess pressure from inside the tank to prevent damage to the tank, other components, and personnel.
PRVs consist of a wide variety of sealing components, including:
- A Range of AS568 O-Rings for several applications: Stem O-Ring, Seat O-Ring, Pressure O-Ring, Flue O-Ring, Insert O-Ring, Inner and Outer Flange O-Rings, & Plug O-Ring.
- Custom molded gaskets are common in Bumper, Washer, Seal, and Filler Gasket applications.
- PTFE Washers and Gaskets for Shaft Seals and Safety Mechanism Washers.
- A HMF FlatSealTM flange gasket, made of a PTFE-based polymer with additives, depending on the application, is used to ensure a proper connection between the valve and the tank.
Vacuum Relief Valve
Vacuum Relief Valves (VRVs), situated at the top of tank cars, are designed to prevent the tank from implosion caused by a vacuum forming inside the tank. The valves operate by allowing air into the tank once the pressure in the tank drops below a set pressure. The sealing components include:
- AS568 O-Rings
- Quad-Ring® Seal/X-Ring
- Custom molded gaskets
Vent/Sampling Valve (Needle)
Needle Valves, also known as Sample Valves, are used in conjunction with transfer valves to either allow for ventilation during loading and unloading or to allow for a small sample of the product to be removed. Depending on the model, these valves consist of one or two AS568 O-Rings.
Bottom Outlet Valve (Ball)
Bottom Outlet Valves (ball design), attached to the bottom of general-purpose tank cars, are used to unload the contents of the tank. These valves are typically operated with a handle that allows for 90-degree (open/closed) rotation. The sealing components include:
- A Range of AS568 O-Rings for several applications: Base O-Ring, Body O-Ring, Seat O-Ring, Bore O-Ring, Shaft O-Ring, and Bushing O-Ring.
- A variety of PTFE components that perform several different sealing functions: Packing Sets, Seat Seals, Body Seals, Thrust Washers, Wipers, and Stem Gaskets.
- Custom molded gaskets and Spiral Wound Gaskets.
- A HMF FlatSealTM flange gasket, made of a PTFE-based polymer with additives, depending on the application, is used to ensure a proper connection between the valve and the tank.
Bottom Outlet Valve (Plug)
Bottom Outlet Valves (plug design), attached to the bottom of general-purpose tank cars, are used to unload the contents of the tank.
Bottom Washout
Attached to the bottom of general-purpose tank cars in lieu of a bottom outlet valve, the Bottom Washout seals tank contents to prevent accidental releases. The Bottom Washout typically contains either one O-Ring or one gasket.
CO2 Regulator
When used in conjunction with a pressure relief valve, CO2 Regulators control the flow of carbon dioxide into and out of tank cars. One O-Ring is commonly used to seal CO2 Regulators.
Nozzle Extension
Attached to the outlet side of a bottom outlet valve, the Nozzle Extension aids tank car unloading. One O-Ring typically seals the nozzle extension.
Dry Disconnect
A Dry Disconnect allows for the transfer of fluids during loading and unloading and is used for a quick and spill free connection and disconnection. An O-Ring seals the Dry Disconnect.
Dust Cap
Attached to an outlet, the Dust Cap helps maintain a tight seal and provides protection when the product is not in use. An O-Ring or gasket is used to seal the Dust Cap.
Thermowell
Thermowells (thermometer wells) provide a protective casing for a thermometer to be inserted into the tank to measure the internal temperature. Thermowells commonly include an AS568 O-Ring and two (2) custom molded gaskets.
Angle Transfer Valves
Angle Transfer Valves (ball and plug designs) are situated on top of tank cars to enable loading and unloading of the content and to allow air flow into and out of the tank. Sealing components include:
- A Range of AS568 O-Rings for different sealing functions: Outlet O-Ring, Stem O-Ring or X-Ring, Body O-Ring, and Retainer O-Ring.
- A variety of PTFE components that perform several different sealing functions: Packing Sets, Seat Seals, Stem Plugs, and Insert Gaskets.
- A HMF FlatSealTM flange gasket, made of a PTFE-based polymer with additives, depending on the application, is used to ensure a proper connection between the valve and the tank.
Top Transfer Valve (Ball)
Top Transfer Valves are situated on top of tank cars to enable loading and unloading of the content and to allow air flow into and out of the tank.
